Students in the Junior Achievement (JA) youth
philanthropy class at Keenan High School met their goal to
award $5,500 to nonprofit organizations in the community
and school district.
Sponsored by The New Morning Foundation, the JA
company, Raiders 513, had a scratch-off fundraiser and
raised the required $500 profit to earn matching funds on
a 10:1 basis.
Grants were presented to A Better Way-Project Go
(Gang Out), Carolina Children’s Home, Just ‘Cause and
Project GOAL at Keenan High.
“We
worked as a class to bring this project together, “ said
Keenan’s JA president Jonathan Myers. “We learned how
to work in our community.
Math teacher Tamikah Battle-Nunally commented,
“It was good for students to listen to the presentation
from the organization before they made their grant
decisions. That helped them understand what the money
would be used for.”
The goals of the JA youth philanthropy program are
to teach students how to operate a profitable business,
increase their knowledge of community concerns and
nonprofit organizations in their community and give
students hands-on experience with personal philanthropy
and corporate citizenship.
