Groundbreaking ceremonies
scheduled for Crayton Middle School
Richland School District One will hold groundbreaking ceremonies for the new
Crayton Middle School Friday, April 23 at 10 a.m. at the present site, 5000 Clemson
Ave.
In November 2002, Richland One voters approved a $381 million bond issue
to upgrade the district's middle schools and high schools. As part of the bond
issue, Crayton will be rebuilt at the present site with a new prototypical
middle school facility to support today’s educational needs, improve
safety and security, and provide students with a high-quality learning environment.
The new facility will have a student capacity of 1,000 and an expected enrollment
of 897.
The current school was constructed on a15-acre site in 1951and opened for
the 1951-52 school year as an elementary school with three buildings. An additional
10 acres were purchased, and in 1956, the junior high section was constructed.
It opened in 1957 with nine buildings. For several years, Crayton was one of
the city’s combination elementary and junior high schools. In 1969, it
was restructured to house middle school students in grades 6-8.
The public is invited to attend. |
