Eau Claire student named finalist in Archibald
Rutledge scholarship competition
Curtis Harris, a student at Eau Claire High
School, was one of 27 finalists in the Archibald
Rutledge Scholarships competition.
The finalists from across South Carolina gathered
at the State Department of Education for the
annual fine arts scholarship competition. Named
for South Carolina’s first Poet Laureate,
Archibald Rutledge, the scholarships recognize
outstanding student achievement in creative
writing, drama, music and visual arts.
Harris competed in the field of music and
was named as a finalist based upon an original
music composition.
The Columbia competition was the culmination
of a statewide selection process. Students
submitted works and applied for the scholarships
in their respective fields. Student submissions
included musical compositions, plays, artwork
and poetry. During the final event, students
met with judges, all specialists in their respective
fields, and completed activities and interviews
on site at the Department.
Mac Arthur Goodwin, former National Art Education
Association President and current lecturer/consultant
from Claflin University, shared remarks with
the students and assisted in recognizing their
achievement.
The scholarship program is funded through
the General Assembly and sponsored by the State
Department of Education.
