Richland One honors Middle School and S.C. Junior Scholars

Two hundred eighth-grade students were recognized as Middle School Scholars (MSS) and S.C. Junior Scholars in a special ceremony held April 19 in the Dreher High School Auditorium.

Richland One’s Middle School Scholars (MSS) program is designed to encourage and reward academic excellence among Gifted Academic and Artistic students. Students must take three or more Advanced Academic Program (AAP) courses each academic year, maintain an overall 3.4 grade point ratio in AAP courses, have no grade below C in non-AAP courses and earn two points for participation in extracurricular activities each year.

The S.C. Junior Scholars program, sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Education, identifies students with exceptionally high scholastic achievement and intellectual ability, based upon their performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) in the eighth-grade. Identified students are provided opportunities that will facilitate their intellectual growth, broaden their individual interest and promote their scholastic achievement in ways not currently available in the school program. Such opportunities are provided during the academic school year or summer following identification in the eighth grade and continue throughout high school.

Seventy-six students were honored as S.C. Junior Scholars, 47 were honored as Middle School Scholars, and 77students were honored as both Middle School Scholars and S.C. Junior Scholars. Honorees are listed below by school.
