Adult Education Programs Offer a Gateway to Success for Thousands of Students

During the 2007-2008 school year, Richland One’s Office of Adult Education helped more than 3,000 high school and adult students achieve their academic, professional and personal goals.

By the numbers, the office served a total of 3,441 students and awarded 51 high school diplomas, 159 GEDs and 380 Workkeys certificates.

“Our classes are a fantastic bargain and can lead to greater success academically and professionally,” said Ericka Hursey, director of Adult Education. “It’s never too late to go back to school. We have a variety of day and evening programs to meet the community’s needs. Some of our programs are free. Not only can we help people sharpen their job skills and be more marketable, we can help them reach personal self-improvement goals in basic reading, writing and math. We have a lot to offer the community.”

In addition to GED and high school diploma programs, Richland One’s Adult Education programs offer adult literacy courses (basic English and math), English as a second language, training for childcare providers and basic computer courses. Workkeys, one of its most innovative programs, provides applicants with job placement skills specifically requested by local businesses that recruit employees from the program. Trainees who complete the program will be referred to local businesses that use the WorkKeys certification.

Anyone int erested in registering for a program this fall or obtaining additional information can contact the Office of Adult Education at 343-2935.
