Richland One Students Win State Writing Awards

They definitely have an exceptional way with words. Horrell Hill Elementary School student Tyler Gregory Turner-Claytor and St. Andrews Middle School student Tyler Edmond have been honored as district winners in the State Superintendent’s Writing Award program.

In all, the State Department of Education honored 137 fifth- and eighth-grade students in South Carolina as district winners. In addition to receiving a plaque from State Superintendent of Education Dr. Jim Rex, district winners have been invited to a summer writing institute to sharpen their skills.

The purpose of the program is to provide fifth- and eighth-grade students an opportunity to express themselves through writing. Topics of this year’s competition were definitely timely. They focused on financial issues such as the importance of personal financial responsibility and of starting to save for the future at a young age.

Essays are judged on their content, development, organization, vocabulary, phrasing, and on the writer’s command of grammar, capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
