St. Andrews Baptist Church To Receive South Carolina Governor’s Volunteer Award

In 2001, St. Andrews Baptist Church "adopted" H.B. Rhame Elementary School. Since then church members have served as book buddies and mentors and provided much-needed school supplies for students. Twice a week, they host a Kids’ Café’ where they provide tutoring, fun activities and meals for students and their families.

On Monday, May 5, church members will be presented with the 2008 South Carolina Governor’s Volunteer Group Award. The award honors a group that has provided exceptional service to the community and individuals and that has shown extraordinary initiative and commitment.

The presentation will be made at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium at the Richland County Public Library, 1431 Assembly St.

"We appreciate all of the love, sacrifice and caring St. Andrews Baptist Church members have provided," said Richland One volunteer coordinator Katy Watkins. "They are a stellar example of the impact a community organization can have on the education of our children."

The Governor’s Volunteer Group Award is presented annually in conjunction with the South Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration (SCAVA).

St. Andrews Baptist also received the 2008 Partner of the Year Award from Richland One at the district’s annual Volunteer Recognition Breakfast in March. The Partner of the Year Award recognizes a business or community group that has made significant contributions to a school.
