Richland One Schools Celebrate Earth Day

Many Richland One schools celebrate Earth Day-type environmental projects year-round.  Here are just a few of the activities planned for this week:

Forest Heights Elementary
2500 Blue Ridge Terrace
EcoFest: Friday, April 25, 5:30 p.m.

Nine classes will perform an environmental musical on April 25, but Forest Heights does many year-round environmental projects including composting, gardening and collecting old blue jeans that are made into quilts for the Family Shelter.

Brockman Elementary
2245 Montclair Drive
Starting on April 22, customers of the Publix on Forest Drive will receive their groceries in brown paper bags that have been decorated with environmental messages and drawings created by Brockman students.  More than 300 bags were decorated by students.

Challenger Learning Center
2600-A Barhamville Road
April 22-25
This week groups of students in the gifted and talented program of Camden Middle School will be touring the Challenger Learning Center where they will construct a probe, plot an interception, and overcome the challenges of space travel while studying the earth’s atmosphere.

In the e-Planetarium, students will be engrossed into the Earth’s history in 3-D where they will learn about the eclipse, the ice age, earth’s water cycle and the moon on a roller coaster-like ride through lava as they see roaring dinosaurs and crashing asteroids.

Richland One staff and the community members who want to get into the Earth Day spirit can bring their newspapers, plastic bottles and aluminum cans to the Challenger Center for recycling.

The Challenger Learning Center offers an exciting, hands-on experience in an environment of space exploration and includes a space flight simulator modeled after NASA’s Mission Control.
