BUSINESS, COMMUNITY LEADERS TO SERVE AS RICHLAND ONE PRINCIPALS FOR A DAY

Fifty business, civic and community leaders will report to the principal’s office Thursday, but it won’t be because they’ve misbehaved. They will serve as Principals For A Day of Richland One schools.

"Principal For A Day" is a highly successful community engagement initiative with programs in several cities and schools districts across the country, including Charleston, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Phoenix. The program is new to Richland One. It is sponsored by Richland One and the Together We Can partnership.

Each Richland One school will have a Principal For A Day on April 16. Participants will shadow the school principal for the day and assist the principal with various administrative duties and interact with students, teachers and parents. The 50 Principals For A Day include business executives, school board members and other elected officials, military leaders, attorneys, a judge, a college president and members of the news media.

Richland One Superintendent Dr. Percy Mack and Deputy Superintendent Debra Brathwaite came to Richland One from the Dayton (Ohio) Public Schools, which also had a Principal For A Day program.

"Principal For A Day gives participants an opportunity to experience the day-to-day responsibilities of a principal firsthand and gain a greater understanding of the progress being made in our schools as well as the challenges they face," said Brathwaite, who serves as honorary chair of Richland One’s Principal For A Day program.

"We must have the support and involvement of the entire community to improve student achievement in our district," she said. "We hope to see new partnerships formed and existing partnerships strengthened as a result of Principal For A Day."

After school dismisses for the day Thursday, the Principals For A Day will gather for a recognition reception at 4:30 p.m. at the Challenger Learning Center, where they will share their experiences. The Challenger Learning Center is located at 2600-A Barhamville Road, adjacent to W.A. Perry Middle School.
