RICHLAND ONE STUDENT, STAFF WIN AWARDS
An organization that works to provide access to health care for uninsured and underinsured children in South Carolina, recently honored Carolyn Duff, RN, school nurse at A.C. Moore Elementary, as the recipient of its 2008 Dee Dee Chewning Healing Award.
Healthy Learners, a ministry of the Sisters of Charity Health System, was established in 1992 to help alleviate health-related barriers to learning among economically disadvantaged children. The four Healthy Learners programs in South Carolina serve 109 schools in seven school districts, including Richland One.
The Dee Dee Chewning Healing Award recognizes an individual who provides direct care to children served by Healthy Learners and goes “above and beyond” to support and promote the goals and objectives of the program. The award was presented to Duff during a March 18 luncheon at Seawell’s in Columbia.
Duff is a former State School Nurse of the Year and former Richland One Classified Employee of the Year.

A Richland One student and a district administrator were honored during the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children’s Professional Development Conference held February 28-March 1 in Spartanburg.
Chelsey Elliott, a student in Chef Dwaine Collier’s culinary arts II class at Heyward Career and Technology Center, was awarded the Betty Brown Training Grant. Chelsey is a senior at A.C. Flora High School. She plans to attend Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte, NC.
Marilyn Davis, Richland One’s executive director for special education, was named the South Carolina Council for Exceptional Children’s 2008 Advocate of the Year. The prestigious award is given to honor an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of exceptional children and youth.
