Richland One Working to Close Achievement Gap Between African-American and White Students

Richland One is inviting other school districts to join with them in efforts to close the achievement gap between African-American and White students. On Saturday, March 15, from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m., hundreds of educators will gather at the Olympia Learning Center campus to learn about effective strategies from national experts in that field.

The title of the one-day conference is a long one: Closing the Achievement Gap: Releasing the Potential of African American Students in Today’s Public Schools. But it has one single purpose: to seek proven methods of raising the academic expectations of African-American students.

Three national experts have been invited to share their insights, successes and ideas. The power-packed line up includes Dr. Donna Ford, author of Reversing Underachievement Among Gifted Black Students; Curtis Linton, the creator of the award-winning video-based staff development program entitled No Excuses! How to Increase Minority Student Achievement; and Dr. Chrystal Kuykendall, author of the national best-seller From Rage to Hope: Strategies for Reclaiming Black and Hispanic Students.

Although the conference is free to Richland One employees, the fee for non-Richland One educators is $75 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. The registration deadline has been extended to Tuesday, March 11. Attendees who need additional information should contact Tammy Johnson at 400-1669 or tmoye@richlandone.org . The Olympia Learning Center is located at 621 Bluff Road.
