CAT IN THE HAT TO PROMOTE READING AT HYATT PARK ELEMENTARY
Red and white striped stovepipe hats will be the accessory of choice among Hyatt Park Elementary students when the Cat in the Hat visits their school on March 4.
The National Education Association’s Cat-a-Van reading tour is bringing the beloved Dr. Seuss character to Hyatt Park as part of NEA’s annual Read Across America celebration which is designed to get kids excited about reading. More than 45 million children and adults nationwide are expected to participate in this year’s celebration.
Hyatt Park Elementary students in pre-kindergarten through third grade will gather in the school’s cafeteria at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 4 for an hour-long assembly program featuring the Cat in the Hat. Fourth- and fifth-grade students will watch the assembly on the televisions in their classrooms. Every student will receive Cat in the Hat goodies, including a stovepipe hat, a book and a bookmark.
From 9:30-11:30 that morning, school and community leaders, business partners, family and friends will join Principal Liz Eason, students and staff in school-wide read-alouds and a literacy tea that will be hosted by third-grade students and teachers.
During the week of February 25-29, students will complete a book study of a Dr. Seuss book selected for their respective grade levels as part of the activities leading up to the Cat-a-Van visit. The students’ work will be displayed in the media center February 29-March 14.
