SCSBA Black Caucus to award scholarship

The S.C. School Boards Association's Caucus of Black School Board Members is taking applications for its annual essay scholarship. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to an African-American high-school senior who attends a public school in South Carolina.

To apply, students must select one of the following topics and write an essay on why it was important: The Montgomery bus boycott, the 1954 Brown vs. Board of Education decision or The Little Rock Nine. Essays should be no more than three typed, double-spaced pages. Essays will be judged on content, originality, thought-provoking, spelling and grammar, and neatness.

Essays should be mailed to: Vince Ford, SCSBA Caucus of Black School Board Members, 1027 Gregg St., Columbia, SC 29201. Essays must be postmarked by April 1, 2009. For more information, please contact Mr. Ford at 799-2001, ext. 13102.
