Richland One School to Celebrate Mardi Gras, Broadway and more during International Day
On Friday, February 15, starting at 8 a.m., A.C. Moore Elementary students will “visit” Broadway in New York City. After that they’re off to the Caribbean for a carnival and then they’ll head to Alaska to pan for gold and sample salmon jerky, black seaweed and other native grub.
This day of whirlwind travel is part of A.C. Moore’s annual International Day. This year’s event will focus on the continent of North America, its cultures and history.
For weeks students have been studying 11 North American countries and states (Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, Kansas and New York City). Their hard work culminates with a "travel day" where they get to immerse themselves in the culture of those areas by visiting classrooms representing each country or state.
For example, in the Alaskan class they will get to taste foods that are common there. After hearing about Alaska’s Gold Rush, they’ll pan for gold (gravel sprayed gold and put in the sand). In the New York classroom Broadway show tunes take center stage as students enjoy songs from various musicals. Mardi Gras, including beads, music and dancing, will be celebrated in the Caribbean classroom.
Teachers believe a hands-on approach like this not only is a lot of fun, but helps students to remember what they’ve studied.
