Richland One Schools Continue Black History Month Celebrations
Although Black History Month is coming to a close, Richland One schools continue to celebrate this important observance through dance, song and other artistic expressions. Just a few of the exciting events scheduled for next week are listed below. A more detailed listing is on the district’s Web site, www.richlandone.org .
Crayton Middle School
- February 22, at noon and 2:30 p.m., auditorium - An assembly, featuring the performing arts department, will focus on the birth of spirituals in American music from early American history through the Civil War.
Rhame Elementary
- The week of February 25 - Students and staff will collect quarters for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial being constructed in Washington, DC.
Lower Richland High School
- February 26, at 8:30 a.m., school theatre - Community forum (topics include black youth and the issues they face, the Hip Hop Generation, the portrayal of Black women in society)
- February 26, at 2:00 p.m., school theatre - Guest poets Tranzit Thawt and Maximus Parthas from Washington, DC
- February 28, at 11:45 a.m. and 1:25 p.m. - Soul food dinner served in the Diamond Café
- February 29, at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. - School-wide assembly
Horrell Hill Elementary
- February 27, 100 Distinguished Men read to students - To promote the value of books and reading, Horrell Hill is inviting fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and male community members to visit the school from 7:45 to 9:30 a.m. Anyone interested in participating is asked to call the school at 783-5545, ext. 3430.
C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy
- February 27, 10 a.m., gymnasium - The guest speaker for the school assembly will be Carey Rich, an alumni and former star basketball player. Students are encouraged to wear ethnic attire. Workshops centering on the theme of ethnic pride will be conducted throughout the day.
- February 27, at 6 p.m., gymnasium - The drama club will present its performance of "The Orangeburg Massacre" Donations will be accepted.
Hopkins Middle School
- February 27, at 6:30 p.m., auditorium - Seventh-graders will perform "Tale of the Mouse," an African folk tale. Admission: $3 for adults, $1 for students.
Meadowfield Elementary
- February 28 at 6 p.m., cafetorium - "Friendship and Freedom," a play performed by fourth-graders based on the American Girls series
J.P. Thomas Elementary School
- February 28 at 6 p.m., cafeteria - Music and Dance Through the Ages, starting with the drums of Africa through present day
Keenan High School
- February 28, at 8:20 a.m. and 10 a.m. - "Kuumba," a celebration of the arts that developed from the African-American culture during the Harlem Renaissance, will be performed in the Keenan auditorium. Russian teachers visiting Keenan through the Deliberating in Democracy teacher exchange program will have the opportunity to experience the Kuumba celebration and learn about African-American history. Their impressions will be shared with their students when they return to Russia.
E.E. Taylor Elementary
- February 29, at 1 p.m., cafeteria - Dance group performance
