BOARD TAKES STAND AGAINST SHORTENING SCHOOL YEAR

At its January 26 meeting, the Richland One Board of School Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution in opposition to legislative proposals to shorten the length of the school year to save money.

The resolution reads as follows:

WHEREAS, South Carolina law requires public-school students to attend school for a minimum of 180 days each school year; and

WHEREAS, we believe that students need to receive the most instruction possible in order to remain competitive in a global society with increasingly higher educational demands and requirements; and

WHEREAS, we believe reducing the number of days that students attend school would be detrimental to them; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT, we, the members of the Richland One Board of School Commissioners, state our vehement opposition to any legislation that would shorten the length of the school year as a cost-saving measure.
