Richland One School Board Seeking Public Input
The Richland One Board of School Commissioners is seeking public input on a request to name the lecture hall at St. Andrews Middle School the McLeod Lecture Hall in honor of former veteran teacher Margaret McLeod, who died unexpectedly this fall.
McLeod dedicated 31 years of her life to teaching the children of Richland One, including students with special needs. Her friends and colleagues describe her as a professional who gave unselfishly to students by teaching, mentoring, and being an excellent role model. She seldom missed a day of school even while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. McLeod also was a champion in the community known for helping to feed the homeless on holidays and being active in her church.
The Board of School Commissioners has appointed a committee to study the request. Anyone interested in commenting on the proposal should prepare a written statement and mail it to: The Ad Hoc Committee on Naming Facilities, ATTN: Dr. Carlos L. Smith, 1616 Richland Street, Room 211, Columbia, SC 29201. Comments also may be e-mailed to csmith@richlandone.org or faxed to 803-231-7497. The deadline to submit responses is February 1, 2010.
Citizens with questions about the proposal should contact Dr. Smith at 803-231-7496. Media inquiries should be directed to the Richland One Office of Communications at 803-231-7504.
