RICHLAND ONE TRIPLES NUMBER OF PALMETTO GOLD, SILVER AWARD WINNERS
Fourteen Richland One schools have been named 2007-08 Palmetto Gold and Palmetto Silver award winners by the state for having high levels of student academic achievement and improvement, more than triple the number of district schools that earned the awards last year.
Four Richland One schools won Palmetto Gold and Palmetto Silver awards in 2006-07.
The awards criteria, which were developed by the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee, are based on the absolute and improvement ratings assigned to each school on the 2007 report cards. The report card ratings are determined by PACT scores for elementary and middle schools. The high school report card ratings are based on Exit Exam results, graduation rates and the percentage of students passing end-of-course exams.
"A school that wins one of these awards is a school that is focused on kids and driven to succeed," said State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex. "It shows what can happen when educators have high expectations for students and when parents and community members support those educators and students."
A total of 235 schools statewide met the criteria for the 2007-08 awards. Each winning school will receive an award flag, a certificate and a cash award based on several factors, including the type of award received, student enrollment, student attendance, teacher attendance and dropout rates.
