Colonial Williamsburg to Come to Richland One

Is the impending conflict worth the lives of America’s young men? Don’t people under tyranny deserve to fight for their freedom? Those questions resound with us today, but those issues also weighed heavily on the founding fathers of the American Revolution.

On Wednesday, January 9, actors portraying George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and other leaders of the Revolutionary War will once again debate liberty and freedom through historic re-enactments to be performed by a troupe from Colonial Williamsburg. Performers will host a one-hour workshop for Richland One teachers who will learn more about American history content and innovative strategies for teaching history.

Elementary teachers are invited to attend the first performance at 3 p.m. in Room F-15 of the Olympia Professional Development Center, 621 Bluff Road. High school teachers will receive an encore performance at 4:15 p.m.

During the one-hour workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to see Sheila Arnold portray Ol’ Bess, a slave owned by Mr. Southall, owner of the Raleigh Tavern. As a slave at the Raleigh Tavern, Ol’ Bess heard revolutionary leaders such at George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry debate their views on liberty, freedom, and the impending conflict and revolution. If the promise of secrecy is maintained by the participants, Ol’ Bess will discuss her personal thoughts on these issues as well as on slavery.
