High School Bowl Championship April 1, 2008 at SC eTV studios

High School Bowl is an academic competition for high school students in grades 9 through 12 in Richland County School District One. The purpose of the competition is to encourage academic excellence and acknowledge the academic achievements of the students in our district.

The competition is patterned after College Bowl, a nationally televised academic bowl between colleges that was popular in the 1960’s. The contests are held in rounds with each high school being represented by one student from each grade level. Through the process of elimination, one team of students is selected as the district winner. The winning school will receive a plaque denoting its achievement in the competition, and the members of the winning team receive district honor medals and certificates.

The competition in our district is unique. The Information Technology Specialists and teachers in each school sponsor their school’s team. Not only are our academically talented students involved, but students who have an interest in the television broadcast field. These students serve as camera operators and audio technicians for the competition.

The competitions and semi-final rounds are held in the district’s television studio at the Waverley Annex and are videotaped for later broadcast over Time Warner Cable Channel 12. All competitions begin at 10:00 am. The championships match is taped at the South Carolina ETV studios and broadcast on both ETV and Time Warner Cable Channel 12.
