Examples of Services Provided by School Counselors

  • Conduct individual guidance and counseling sessions

  • Conduct small and large group guidance and counseling sessions

  • Conduct classroom guidance and counseling sessions

  • Provide individual planning to assist in meeting the developmental needs of students

  • Make referrals to community agencies and service providers Provide orientation/training for the school staff, families, and students to familiarize them with the range of services offered by the school counselor

  • Conduct needs assessment(s), and interprets the results to the staff, families, and students

  • Maintain confidential records of counseling services provided to students

  • Coordinate special events, projects or programs

  • Coordinate career awareness, health and safety, and character development programs and activities

  • Create and use an effective referral process for assisting students

  • Analyze data such as surveys, discipline referrals, retention record, student grades, attendance, and academic plans to assess the impact on student achievement and to plan intervention as needed

  • Consult with and train teachers, parents and staff regarding students’ needs

  • Provide academic guidance and counseling to individuals and groups of students

  • Provide career guidance and counseling to individuals and groups of students

  • Conduct orientation sessions for students and parents

  • Assists students with course selection

  • Coordinate career-interest inventories and interpret results for families and students

  • Coordinate career awareness, exploration, and preparation activities

  • Conduct goal-oriented counseling sessions in response to identified needs of individuals or groups of students, recurrent topics include: handling stress, study skills development, friendship, building self-image, suicide prevention/intervention, and peer relationships

  • Serves as a student advocate and attend administrative team meetings

  • Provide information to students and families about special programs and community agencies

  • Consult with families about referrals

  • Utilize data (test data, surveys, needs assessments, and student records) to measure student growth

  • Schedule and conduct parent conferences

  • Schedule and conduct Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) conferences with students

  • Assist students with the preparation and processing of application for college admission, scholarships, and summer programs

  • Provide crisis intervention for students

  • Conduct individual senior conferences
