Federal
law, State law, and the State Board of
Education Regulations provide for a free
and appropriate public education for all
children with disabilities.
Major
Principles of the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA PL-105-17)
- Education
must be provided to all children with
disabilities ages 3-21.
- Education
must be provided in the least restrictive
appropriate placement.
- Education
must be provided at no cost to the
parent or student.
- An
Individualized Education Program (IEP)
must be developed for every student
enrolled in special education.
- Transition
services must be provided to all students
fourteen and older enrolled in special
education.
- Procedural
protection must be provided in regard
to referral, evaluation and placement.
- Access
to the general education curriculum
or, if this is not deemed appropriate,
access to an alternative curriculum.
