Grading Procedures Manual for Elementary Schools

Explanation Of Grades

1. Kindergarten students will be given codes/symbols instead of letter grades to explain student progress and development.  Evidence must be provided to support teacher assessment.

2. First and second grade students will be given performance level designations.

3. All students in grades 3-5 will receive a numeric designation with letter grades that inform parents of student progress toward mastery of grade level standards.  Grades will be given in ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS, MATHEMATICS, SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE and HEALTH.  In grades 3-5, the letter grades correspond to the following numerical equivalents:
 

A    Superior                                 93-100

B    Above Average                    85-92

C    Average                                 75-84

D  Below Average                      70-74

F   Not Passing                            Below 70

In grades 3-5, students will also receive performance level designations.

All students will be instructed and graded on grade level with the exception of some students in the Special Education Program (See explanation #9) and some students in the Advanced Academic Program (See explanation #10).

   
6. After students have been given ample opportunity to practice, a formal and/or informal assessment must be given and recorded.  Grades will then be determined based on these assessments, which may include student work, tests, projects, etc.
   
7. Teachers must keep a record of the grades used to determine a student’s letter grade in a subject.
   
8. Effort will be addressed as "Skills and Behaviors that support learning", using these symbols:

+ (Satisfactory)

- (Needs Improvement)

   
9. Special Education students will be instructed and graded on grade level unless modified by their Individual Education Plan (IEP).  Documentation will be kept as described for all students in Richland County School District One. 

Report card grades will be determined using the following strategies:Weighted scale as developed by collaborating teachers

- Mastery of IEP goals

   
10. Advanced Academic Program (AAP) students are instructed on grade level for math and one grade level above their assigned grade for English/Language Arts.  The AAP curriculum exceeds the district’s core curriculum objectives and State adopted standards for all students.  Grades are established using district guidelines as presented for grades 3-5.
