General Guidelines

Providing
for Individual Difference |
The curriculum is designed to provide for all grades levels individual differences. Students will special needs are mainstreamed with the regular class in the least restricted environment. |

Equipment |
A suggested list of equipment is provided in the document Each school should have a sufficient supply of equipment allowing each student his/her own materials when practicing. The physical education teachers is responsible for inventorying equipment, ordering equipment, storing equipment safely, and checking the condition of each piece of equipment before use. |
| Richland School District One has adopted the FITNESSGRAM as a method of assessing students' fitness level. It is administered to 4th and 5th grade students during the first nine weeks of school. | |

Organization |
All students are required to be appropriately dressed when
scheduled for physical education class. Physical Education teacher is required to inform administration of equipment and facility needs and providing a safe, learning environment. |

Excuses |
Physical educators and school administrators should work closely with local doctors to establish guidelines controlling indiscriminate excuses request by parents. Before accepting an excuse, make sure a physician or parent signs the excuse. Follow up the excuse with a phone call to parents. Teachers should plan an alternate task for students with needed or parental excuses. |

Grading |
Students should be assessed on achievement of specific objectives outlined in curriculum guide. Students achievement should receive the same consideration as other curriculum subjects when figuring student average. Students are awarded a number grade of 1, 2, 3, or 4 with 1 being the highest effort grade awarded. If 4 is given, a written explanation is needed. |

Teacher Responsibility and
Competencies |
The physical education teacher possesses the same qualifications as other members of the faculty and should accept the same duties and responsibilities. In a situation where the physical education instructor is not considered a full-time teacher, duties may and should differ for teachers who are full-time. |
