Selection Criteria
The district’s Coach of the Year should be a head coach whose team (s) has/have excelled athletically, academically and participated in community service. S/he should perform job responsibilities at a level that exceeds expectations on the district’s Performance Standards for Athletic Coaches. The coach should be an outstanding teacher of the skill, techniques and tactics of their particular sport (s). The coach motivates his/her players to improve individual and team performance. The coach should have the respect and admiration of student-athletes, students, peers, parents and the school’s administration. The coach is an exemplary role model who plays active and useful roles at school and in the community, often distinguishing him/her self as a leader. The coach should be involved in professional organizations and seek to improve him/her self through professional development activities.

Nominees can include any head coach who works full-time or part-time in any capacity in the district. The only restriction is the coach must have served in the district for a minimum of 12 months, and not be on an improvement plan or extended evaluation. The coach also must plan to continue to be employed by the district and not to retire or leave coaching or the district for the year for which s/he is selected. Coaches who previously have been selected also are eligible, so long as they meet the selection criteria.

Nominations
Using the nomination form provided, any full-time or part-time district employee may submit a nomination for this award from April 21st until May 19th. The nomination form, which must be completely filled out, is to be turned in to the principal. The principal will certify that the nominee’s last, formal evaluation ratings are comparable to satisfactory or above, and that there are no performance or professional behavior concerns that would prohibit the nominee from representing the district as Coach of the Year. The principal will then forward the nomination forms of those eligible coaches to the selection committee. Information on the nomination forms will be made available only to the committee. The facilitator of the selection committee will notify all persons for whom the committee received nomination forms and ask if they wish to be considered for the award.

Coach of the Year Selection
A selection committee composed of the following will select the middle school and high school Coach of the Year: the district athletics director; an executive director of schools, chief officer or designee; two school athletics directors/coordinators (one middle school and one high school); a middle or high school principal; a community member; a media sports representative; and one appointed member (if necessary). The district athletics director will serve as facilitator of the process.

In June of each year, the committee will meet to select three finalists from the middle school level and three from the high school level. One from each level will be chosen Middle School Coach of the Year and High School Coach of the Year. All finalists will be interviewed by the judges. The Coaches of the Year and all finalists will be recognized in various media, at the Coaches Convocation and at appropriate district celebrations.
