Office of Extended Day Programs
Three
Core Areas - Academic, Enrichment & Summer
In
an effort to assist in the development
of the "total" child, three core
areas of concentration have been established
within the program. The areas targeted
are academic, enrichment, and summer core.
Academic
Core
The academic core consist of reading, mathematics, and science. The
program provides one-on-one college and adult reading tutors and homework
assistance according to the needs of students. Students work on developing
academic skills in the computer labs and use the Internet to access
resources for school assignments and projects. At each school site,
teachers provide instruction and work with collaborating partners on
tutoring, instructional strategies, and homework assistance.
Enrichment
Core
The enrichment core is designed to provide After School Programs students
with a variety of activities including, but not limited to: music,
fine arts, drama, physical activities, motivational speakers, crafts,
and dance. The arts offer an alternative for success for students who
struggle academically. Involvement in the arts also helps students
understand the importance of hard work, self-discipline, and commitment
to excellence.
Summer
Core
The After School Programs participants will have the opportunity to
attend the District's Summer School through recommendation, requirement,
or parental option. Students who do not attend summer school will be
referred to the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) at the University
of South Carolina (USC). NYSP is a sports program that also provides
hands on academic instruction and prevention education on alcohol and
other drugs and health promotion as the goal. A summer transition program
will be held for incoming 6th grade students. This program will assist
in bridging the academic and social gap between elementary and middle
school.
