Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) and
Motivation
for Academic Performance Program (MAP)

TIP
Duke University administers the College Board’s Scholastic Aptitude
Test (SAT) and the American College Testing Program’s Assessment
(ACT) to highly able, seventh-grade students. The Talent Identification
Program assists participants by providing eligible students with information
about their ability and educational options.
Eligibility
- Duke TIP 7th Grade Program
The higher-scoring students (SAT: Math M>510; Verbal V>510; / ACT:
math M>21; Verbal Eng >25) are sent invitations to recognition
ceremonies. The top-scoring students are invited to a grand recognition
ceremony at Duke University in May.
MAP
Eligibility-MAP
applicants must:
1.
Live or attend school in TIP's 16-state
region (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia,
Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma,
South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas).
2.
Be in the 4th or 5th grade when applying.
Students who enrolled in the MAP program
as 4th graders do not need to reapply
as 5th graders. Students who enroll are
part of the MAP program through 6th grade.
3.
Have scored at the 90th percentile or
above in one acceptable subtest area
on the national norms of a standardized
achievement, aptitude or mental ability
test. Scores from either of the two most
recent test administrations are acceptable.
Contact TIP if you have questions concerning
acceptability of any test.
Example
of Acceptable Subtests (not
a complete list)-90th percentile is required
in only one of the categories (verbal,
math, or composite).

Total, Reading Comprehension, Language
Total, Science, or Social Studies
- Math-Problem
Solving, Concepts, Concepts and Applications,
or Math Total
- Composite-Total
(Basic), Total (Complete), Total (Composite),
or Total battery
Registration
Registration-
MAP applicants must:
1.
Qualify based upon the eligibility criteria
above.
2.
Complete an original MAP application-no
faxes or photocopies allowed.
3.
Return the completed application by the postmark
deadline along with a check or money
order for $16, payable to Duke University,
or an authorized fee waiver letter. (See
below.)
Fee
Waiver -TIP offers a fee waiver
to students who qualify for free or reduced
lunch programs. These students need to
submit (with their application) a written
statement from a school official on school
stationery stating their eligibility.
This letter is submitted in lieu of the
$16 enrollment fee.

Students who qualify and choose to sign up with
MAP will receive a number of exciting benefits:

. A Certificate of Achievement.

A subscription to the twice-yearly,TThe Navigator, a newsletter that features
articles and activities relevant to intelligent,
young students.
3.
The MAP Guide to Academic Programs, a
directory of academic programs available
for students.
4.
The Student Counseling Guide for parents,
including useful articles and resource
suggestions.
5.
The option of taking an out-of-level
test. MAP participants automatically
will receive information on the EXPLORE test,
developed by American College Testing
for eighth-graders. Students who choose
to register for the EXPLORE test will
have to pay a registration fee (approximately
$22) directly to ACT, at a later time.
Testing sites for the EXPLORE test are
selected by ACT. Limited sites are available,
and some travel may be required.
Certificates
of Achievement
All MAP Certificates of Achievement will be sent directly to the students
at their home address. Schools will receive school reports notifying
them of participating students and ribbons for school recognition of
participating MAP students.
