THE A+ SCHOOLS PROJECT
A+ SCHOOLS PROJECT OVERVIEW
Richland One unveils its A+ Schools Project to provide extensive resources and intensive assistance to five schools that did not make their expected gains in student achievement since 2003. State regulation mandates that schools be rated "unsatisfactory" if they fail to make specific achievement growth goals measured by state testing over three years.
The A+ Schools Project is the cornerstone of the district’s efforts to reform education in all Richland One schools and to restore academic focus to schools as needed while honoring their history, culture and past achievements. This project represents a major step toward moving Richland One from good to great by providing all students the quality education they need and deserve, thereby spreading our "islands of excellence" throughout the district.

Achievement, Access and Accountability will be the hallmarks of schools in the A+ Schools Project.
Richland One’s five A+ Schools are: C.A. Johnson Preparatory Academy, Eau Claire High School, W.A. Perry Middle School, Alcorn Middle School and Gibbes Middle School.
Schools identified to participate in the A+ Schools Project benefit from priority staffing, extended school days and additional contract time for teacher training. Student Support Teams will provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring, new materials and strategies that focus on reading and writing achievement, and partnerships with local colleges and universities for student and teacher support. All A+ Schools will receive a full-time parent involvement coordinator and additional computer-assisted technologies and extended school year instruction/summer academies.
A+ Schools also will be equipped with a model classroom and instructional coaching for teachers. Staffing incentives and pay for performance will be provided to ensure priority staff for the schools. A district oversight committee also will meet with school leaders bimonthly to provide advice, support and oversight. |
