    A Message from the Principal

varn Welcome to all of the returning students and families and a very special welcome to those joining Hopkins Elementary for the first time. Our school is committed to developing and delivering a well-rounded educational program for all its students. We believe this includes rigorous academics, varied co-curricular programs, and an effective partnership between home and school.

Hopkins Elementary School is a Leader in Me School where students are taught and practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The Leader in Me program empowers young people to make positive, effective, and responsible choices by introducing and reinforcing the 7 Habits, a set of leadership and life skills from Stephen Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. These habits are:

    1. Be proactive - take responsibility and initiative.
    2. Begin with the end in mind - plan and set goals.
    3. Put first things first - set priorities and practice discipline.
    4. Think Win-Win - consider others and seek alternatives to conflict.
    5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood - listen to others, learn from their views.
    6. Synergize - value others' strengths and team with others to solve problems.
    7. Sharpen the Saw - taking care of the self, learning, and finding meaning outside of school.

When taught and practiced in a K-5 school environment, these 7 Habits have been proven to improve academic engagement, comprehension, and performance by strengthening individual work habits and improving social interactions. They help improve student performance and support school success by helping to foster the qualities of independence (goal-setting, organization, time management, and planning); interdependence (teamwork, conflict management, creativity, and analytical skills); and renewal (fun, desire to learn, and good health & hygiene).

The staff of Hopkins Elementary has made the commitment to model and implement the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in order to provide a caring and nurturing learning environment for our students. Teaching students and developing leaders is what we do! Through the teaching of the 7 habits, our staff is working together with students to create a school that maintains the dignity of children through productive interactions while fostering positive relationships with parents and other community members.

School attendance is mandated by the state and is vitally important to success in school. Please make sure your student is in attendance every day, arriving on time prepared for the day. Instruction will begin at 7:30 AM. When scheduling appointments, we ask that you plan these for after school hours. We also ask that student transportation is taken care of before your child comes to school.

As we begin this year, please remember that this is your school and we welcome your involvement. Positive home/school relationships are a key factor to ensure our students success. We appreciate all the community has done for Hopkins Elementary. We will continue to strengthen the school-community partnership this year through planned workshops and other curriculum events.
